Rochester, NY - Leatt Brace
If any of you attended the Rochester arenacross last week, you might have seen my crash in the lites main event on Saturday night. I cross rutted on the catapult and transferred into the rhythm section going the wrong way and got cleaned out by an oncoming rider. He jumped straight onto my head/neck. It knocked me for a loop and I went to the doctor the other day all that happened was a sprained rotators cup and couple fractures in my shoulder . I have a MRI Tuesday to make sure everything is 100% O.K. The whole reason for this post is to say Thanks to the Leatt Brace. If it wasn't for that thing, I am 110% positive I would be laying in the hospital with a broken neck. I’m much happier with a broken collarbone or shoulder, than a broken neck. If you don't already own a Leatt brace for yourself or your child, please invest in one, or some kind of protection for your / their neck. There has been way to many neck injuries this past year. Please try your best to protect your kids.
Thanks,
Ryan

Legendary motocross instructor Gary “The Professor” Bailey’s brother’s kid, Smith is from Lake Sugar Tree, Va., and is set to do the entire Toyota AMA Arenacross Series. A qualified amateur racer, Smith placed 7th in the 250 B class at Loretta’s this summer, the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series seems like it’s a real good fit for him, according to announcer Tim Cotter.

Local Racer earns a spot at National Championship Motocross Race at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch
Hurricane Mills, TN Ryan Smith just made his dream come true. The 16 year-old dirt bike racer has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 26th annual Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch. Ryan took on over 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1386 qualifying positions.
“The Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in,” says Event Director Tim Cotter. “A win at the Amateur Nationals can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career.”
Most of America’s top professional motocrossers, including Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Travis Pastrana and James Stewart, have won AMA Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn’s. A victory at this race is so valuable that last year, teenager Josh Hill from Yoncalla, Oregon, was rewarded with a six-figure pro contract from the Factory Yamaha racing team after winning an Amateur National Championship last year.
Ryan ( TAZ ) Smith, has been riding since he was 4 ½ years old. Sponsors such as Arai Helmets, Piedmont Motorsports, Full Travel Innovations, Thor, Scott USA, Liquid Performance, Triangle Cycles, Bel-Ray, Gary Bailey MX School and Nihilism Clothing help pay his way to the races. He has won 100 plus races in the last 12 years, and competes nearly every weekend at AMA District 13, 29, 7, 32 in VA., NC., MD., TN..
Ryan will make the long journey to Tennessee along with his Grandfather ( Bob Bailey ), Lance Plotkin and Chris Hawker. Mom (Babbett Bailey Smith) and Sister Melissa Smith will join the boys Tuesday The first day of racing. The race runs July 30 – August 4.
Ryan is just one of the over 20,000 who spent the last four months qualifying for the event. The top finishers in area and regional qualifiers earn a berth into the national championship race at Loretta Lynn’s. Racers may enter a wide variety of classes, from minicycle classes for children as young as four, all the way up to a senior division for riders over 45. There are also classes for women, and classes for both stock and modified bikes.
The track is built on a section of Loretta Lynn’s Ranch and Campground in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The course contains a variety of jumps, corners and other obstacles designed to test the skills and stamina of the racers.
Most riders attend the event with the help of their families. In fact, many groups consider the event their family’s summer vacation. Besides races, the ranch provides family-friendly facilities including a game room, swimming pools, arts and crafts activities, and a fashion and talent show.

The regional at Unadilla went pretty well. Practice on Friday went well. Rain later in the day, counted me out of last round of practices. Saturday started slow due to bad gate picks and thunder storms. Sunday my goal was to get good starts and stay up front and that’s what I did . I dropped out of 125B modified after first moto due to crash and bike problems ending in 17th. After all the moto’s I had pulled it off!!! I qualified for both 250B modified and 250 B stock!! I am GOING TO LORETTA'S!!!! Now its time to settle down and train my butt off til then. I would like to thank my Grandpa, and Chris hawker aka C-hawk for all the help these last couple weeks!! And Johnny Wasco for the awesome battles this weekend. Even our thought was regional would be me and him battled every moto, we were together in. John is 1st alternate in the 250B Mod but will go to Bremen, GA to finalize his spot to join me at LL National.

Birch final update - Today (3/25) started out great got a good start in four stroke battled with Stephen winter and took the win in that...then 125B mod I got a bad start came to 3rd then hit a banner stake and locked my front break and I went down and bike wouldn't start and I went back to like 20th and need up 13th. then 250B mod first moto was where it all went bad I got a 2nd place start behind Zane "the scrub" Hodges and he went down and I was way out front and in this double triple section I doubled in and hit some mud and bike swapped and bucked me off and I landed on my head and kinda was out of it for a second or two and was 33rd that moto.. so then it was time for four stroke moto 2 ..I got the hole shot for once and lead the whole moto but Adam Blessing kept me honest! then in second moto of 125B mod I got a 3rd place start and just chilled right there and took 3rd and then I decided not to run 250B because of first moto score and being sore from crash still but over all scores were
